Life at Business school (Management education) is shit yaar (May be) …I don’t understand how they came to design this system…Where they have these hefty subjects with so less time to study and understand them. (Assumption). Let’s try analyzing.
Each tri-semester is less than 90 days which have 5 subjects at least and with 30 sessions each. Each session is 90 mins. That comes to 2700 mins. That is 45 hrs per subject. That means a total of 225 hrs of course study.
This 225 hrs of course includes lectures, case discussions, assignment writing, presentations, end term exam. If the professor is concerned about the exposure then may be a guest lecture in between by some industry expert.
90 days have 2160 hrs. Now I am going to break it down.
Each day we spend attending at least 3 lectures. At max we have 4 lectures on some days. And there is 15 mins break in between each session. That means at least 45 mins break. And the lunch hour is of 45 mins. That means we’re spending at least 360 mins or close to 6 hrs at college of the 24 hrs we have in a day. 30 mins travelling to college through bus. And the first thing to subtract from the remaining time left is sleeping time. Least time to take for sleeping is 6 hrs. Now we are left with 11hr 30 mins with us. Out of which for breakfast and evening snacks take out 30 mins (15 min each). 30 mins for dinner. 1 hr for nature’s call and having bath in a day (I don’t bath twice a day, but most of us do). Now we’re left with 9 hr 30 min in a day. OMG lot of time huh!!
Checking mails, replying to them, social networking, reading online news, listening to music, having some physical activity and having some chat with friends takes away 3 hrs time.
Left with 6.30 mins (still lot of time, right friends?)
But then, there may be a case for the next day. And a chapter reading for the second session. And the third professor wants you to write something for his course as a part of assignment. (All of them assumptions , most assumptions are true to my knowledge, and I know most of you reading will agree too) Then how you divide your 6hr 30 mins huh?? A case takes 1 hr to read at least if its 14 page case ( according to my reading speed) If it also has exhibits then how much time will it take huh?? ( I don’t know as I skip all the exhibits, I never go through them) . And for the sake of learning the design of the case study methodology is tilted towards peer learning. You have to sit with your study group and discuss the case. [Harvard waalon ne American philosophy ke according banaya hain bhai. Indians are not comfortable working in groups (assumption again) .Like Japanese style of working can’t be adopted in America. Waise hi American style of learning can’t be implemented and executed in India. (I totally support this point) ][I also know that at Harvard people from different cultures and countries co- exist, same as India][contradicting to my above statement , but I need to give both views ,right?] But the case discussion if taken seriously will consume like more than 1 hr. so now you are left with ample time yaar…wow this writing is slowly progressing towards time management concepts. That you have time. Now manage it. Sahi hain sadu !! (patting my back)
So back to counting hours. How much are we left with? Hmm…4.30 mins. But we shall take 4 hrs. as 15 mins break banta hain har ghate main jab tum itna mehnat kar rahe hain. Mehnat kar rahe ho naa??
Now yaar, 4 hrs, 2 tasks left. One reading the chapter for the second session and writing assignment for the third session. Which are totally individual tasks. So let’s assume you can do it. As you all are now well acquainted with time management skills and well aware of the fact that where to search on net for the assignment answer I don’t suggest you anything here.
So this is how the day is spent for most of us. But hey you forgot one thing. There are weekends . Saturday and Sunday which are holidays. So at weekends you can spend more time . right? But this doesn’t stop here.
We have term end projects. Which are group projects. According to professor we must spend at least a 1 hr a day on that. Lets assume that we spend 4 hrs each week on a project. And we have 6 weeks to complete it. I am taking 6 weeks as we start late and also it takes time to formulate groups, think of the company to study in the project, discuss with prof etc. so 6 weeks, each week 4 hrs. i.e. 24 hrs on a project. We have 4 projects. (Assumption that we don’t have project for 1 subject, but we have end term presentation with more weightage so, go on reading, don’t think much) .96 hrs of work on projects for a term. Oh, its lot! Are you so much productive? If you are then hats off guys!!
Now what’s the point am I making? I am confused at the end. Let me try to calculate again. Calculate only study hours we can put in a tri-semester. (Just for fun I am doing this, take it light, otherwise you will suffer with chronic heart, liver and lung problems).
Now total 6hr 30 mins daily study for 90 days comes to 585 hrs + 96 hrs for projects = 681 hrs of total out of class working hours. Let’s add 225 hrs of class work too. This comes to 906 hrs of total working hours including classes at college and your hard work at hostel!! Therefore 906 hrs for 12 weeks ,average we working 76 hrs a week.OMG 76 hrs a week?? Corporate world main aisa hi hota hain kya??
2160 hrs (90 days) – 906 hrs =1200 hrs
1200 hrs – 540 hrs (your 6 hrs sleeping daily) =660 hrs
660 hrs – 270 hrs (3hrs daily for chatting, mails, social networking etc which I mentioned above)= 390hrs
390 hrs – 180 hrs =210 hrs ( breakfast, dinner , bath etc )
210 hrs left. Is it really? When I have divided 24 hrs properly and multiplied with 90 days at each step, how can we left with 210 surplus. That means we have time. But we don’t manage it. So friends now its time for you to crack this case. Find the faulty calculations above and please comment below and let’s have discussion on this here.
